Brief Introduction about the Forest Industry of Zhejiang
Province
Zhejiang province, located in the southeast of China and adjacent
to Shanghai, is very convenient in traffic and geographically
superior. Hangzhou, the capital of the province, only one and
a half hours' journey from Shanghai by car, is well known as
" the Paradise of the World" home and abroad for its
beautiful West-lake. The population of Zhejiang is over 45 million
and its general domestic product (GDP) has the 4th place in
the Chinese mainland.
The whole province boasts of 101,800 square kilometers terrestrial
area and the forest coverage reaches 59.4 percent. In recent
years, in the meantime of greening the land of Zhejiang and
improving its ecological environment, the Forest Industry of
Zhejaing Province (FIZP) is also dedicated to the development
of forest industry and the increase of revenue from forest industry.
There are more than 20,000 wood and bamboo manufacturing factories,
annually producing over 10,000,000 cubic meter lignum and over
100,000,000 bamboo liners. In the year 2002 the overall revenue
from the FIZP is 70 billion RMB, taking the first place in China.
1. Artificial Board Industry
Being well equipped and highly productive, Zhejiang is a major
artificial board-manufacturing base in China and its manufacturing
capacity is 4,500,000 cubic meters. Kinds of plywood, middle
or high-density fibrous board, cabinetwork board, flake board,
decorative board, wood & bamboo compound board, architectural
moulding boards are all available.
And the factories are mainly in Jiasan, Huzhou and Lishui.
2. Wood Item Manufacturing Industry 
As a leading province of wood item manufacturing, Zhejiang mainly
produces woody toys, arts and crafts, woody flooring, and liner
furniture.
Wood item is one of the principal products that are exporting
and profitable, particularly the woody toys and arts and crafts
are leading products nationwide. And the factories are mainly
in Yunhe, Taizhou, Huzhou, Dongyang and Wenzhou.
3.Dried and Fresh Fruits Base
The economic forest cultivated in Zhejiang is over 17,000,000
mu(about 1,130,000 hectares), which produces a variety of well
known fruits. And the annual yield of the province exceeds 300
million tons, mainly including orange, pomelo, waxberry, greengage,
spicebush, chestnut and loquat and so on.
4. Bamboo industry
 Bamboo
is appreciated by people due to its fast growing speed, short
growinw period, bright future for development and utilization
and harmonious relations with environmental protection and potential
operation. Zhejiang is a leading province of bamboo industry,
long possessing the reputation of " World bamboo is in
China, Chinese bamboo is in Zhejiang ". The total area
of bamboo in Zhejiang is in 12, 000, 000 mu (80, 000 hectares),
accounting for 13 percent of total forest area of Zhejiang province,
the number of living bamboo is about 1,140,000,000, and the
number of commodity bamboo annually is over 100,000,000, taking
up 20 percent of the number of the whole country. Bamboo is
fully used from bamboo wood to bamboo shoot, bamboo branch,
and bamboo leaf and bamboo root. The types of bamboo products
are over 3000, mainly including bamboo plywood, bamboo flooring,
bamboo shoot, bamboo charcoal, bamboo arts and crafts, necessities
and bamboo chemical products. There are more than 2000 factories
and firms engaging in bamboo manufacturing. The profit made
from bamboo industry is over 11 billion RMB, and revenue from
export is over 0.3 billion dollars.
5.Flowers and Seedlings
Zhejiang is also a leading province in producing flowers and
seedlings, the cultivated area is over 800, 000 mu (53,000 hectares),
the cultivated varieties are over 28000. Factories and firms
dealing with flowers are 15710. Ornamental seedling annually
produced are 300,000, 000.
6. Forest tourism
The beautiful Zhejiang province, with many well-known mountains
and rivers, is one of the provinces that possess the largest
number of forest parks in China. There are 70 forest parks in
Zhejiang, the total area in operation is 4,000,000mu, among
which 20 are national forest parks. It also boasts of very abundant
landscape resources such as rivers, lakes, seas, mountains,
waterfalls, fountains and caves. Haitian Buddhist Resort in
eastern Zhejiang, Qianjiang Headwater in western Zhejiang and
Bamboo Folk Customs are all characteristically famous local
customs. The visitors from home and abroad received by forest
parks annually are over 12 million.
