A Brief Introduction of Wood Industry & Import-Export Trade in China


China is one of the biggest consumption markets in woody products and manufacturing. The average growth of forest industry is 26% in the previous five years and the annual yield of wood-based panel gets to 29.80 million cubic meters which is increased 98.27% in 1999 with 15.03 million cubic meters. Since Chinese government has carried out the Natural Forest Protection Program, the timber outputs is reduced but imports has been increased. In 2002 the nationwide timber output was 38.889 million cubic meters, which is less13.479 million than 52.368 million cubic meters in the year of 1999. The log imports got to 24.33 million cubic meters more 14.194 million than the number of 10.136 in 1999. The sawnwood imports got to 5.4 million by increasing 2.64 million cubic meters more than the number 2.76 of 1999. The imports-exports of forest products was up to $22.2 billion by increasing 45.76%, in which exports was made $9.426 billion by growing 47.7% (includes furniture, plywood, woody and bamboo products, arts and crafts, fruits and nuts, rosin, and so on). And imports got to $12.774 billion by increasing 44.3% (such as wood pulp, waste paper, paper, log and sawnwood).

This table indicates, that domestic wood production has been reduced, that log and sawnwood imports has been increased ,that forest products imports and exports has been increased.

This picture indicates, in 2000 forest products export, furniture is about 26%, wood-based panel & veneer is about 7%, bamboo products is about 10%,other wood products is about 20%.
